Finally! I have finished this piece... it took a damn long time only painting on weekends when not travelling, and waiting for the mirror to get cut and oil paint to dry, but im happy now, i did it. phew. work in progress here: [link]
Ok, so, this is a really mixed media painting that borders on a painted sculpture.
Idea was this, take a nice image from my favourite artist and manipulate it into something more physical. I did a study awhile ago of the actual painting by Philip Clairmont. [link]
I had an idea of the vase refecting not the artists vision but rather the viewer.. but distorted sightly to make it an unreal image.
I found an old wooden frame, with hinges on top even! And painted it even more like a frame, but slightly different. Put a flat board behind with hessian (potato sack material) and painted that too, changing the original image slightly to make the composition better.
Next was the mirror, beautifully cut for the most part (given the limitations) and glued onto a plaster back. The frame is actually about 5cm thick so needed to build up behind. I carved a piece of wood for the vase base. The sides of the plaster backing were visible, i originally wanted to put mirrors on those sides also but it was over complicated so i glued aluminium foil to it. You cant see sorry. I might put some detail pics on and link to this..
Final act was to touch the frame up and finally clean the glass
Photo was taken on an angle and perspective altered in free editing programme GIMP.
Height -51cm (frame only 39.5 cm)
